What is GS1-128?

GS1-128 uses the Code 128 barcode symbology to carry structured GS1 data. It is widely used in logistics, shipping, case labeling and supply-chain workflows where a symbol needs to encode more than a single product identifier.

Application Identifiers define the meaning and expected format of each data element, such as a GTIN, batch number, expiry date or quantity.

Data and validation

GS1-128 data is not simply free text. Each field is associated with a GS1 Application Identifier and may have fixed or variable length rules.

Variable-length fields require correct separation when additional data follows. Barcode Next should expose the structured payload clearly and validate supported Application Identifiers rather than asking users to manually guess separator placement.

Structure, size and quiet zones

The underlying symbol is Code 128, with GS1-specific signaling and data construction. Final width depends on the element string and chosen encoding.

Barcode Next support

Barcode Next can provide structured GS1 data entry, validation, preview and export while retaining control over size, quiet zones, human-readable text, batch processing and label-sheet output.
