What is EAN-13?
EAN-13 is one of the most widely used retail barcode formats. It encodes a 13-digit GTIN and is commonly printed on consumer product packaging for point-of-sale identification.
The symbol contains fixed guard patterns and a required check digit. Because retail workflows often depend on predictable dimensions and reliable scanning, EAN-13 output is normally created with controlled sizing, quiet zones and human-readable text rather than treated as a purely decorative graphic.
Data and validation
EAN-13 accepts numeric data only. A complete symbol contains 13 digits, with the final digit serving as the check digit.

Structure, size and quiet zones
EAN-13 uses a fixed bar structure with left, center and right guard patterns. The encoded width is based on a fixed number of modules, while the final physical size depends on the selected module width or target output dimensions.
Quiet zones should remain clear on both sides of the symbol. Human-readable digits are normally displayed below the bars, with the leading digit positioned separately to the left of the main bar group.
