What is EAN-8?
EAN-8 is a compact retail barcode designed for products where the larger EAN-13 symbol would be difficult to fit. It encodes an 8-digit GTIN and uses a shorter fixed structure while retaining the familiar EAN guard patterns and human-readable text.
Because EAN-8 identifiers are assigned differently from EAN-13 values, it should not be treated as a simple shortened EAN-13 number.
Data and validation
EAN-8 uses eight numeric digits, including a required final check digit. Barcode Next validates the numeric length and check-digit relationship before output.
Batch generation follows the same workflow as other retail formats: each record is validated, previewed and then exported or printed.
Structure, size and quiet zones
EAN-8 has left, center and right guard patterns and a fixed module structure. Quiet zones are required on both sides, and human-readable digits are normally shown beneath the symbol.
