What is Code 39?

Code 39 is a widely recognized linear barcode format used in industrial, government, automotive and internal identification workflows.

Compared with Code 128 it is less dense, but its straightforward character set and long history mean it remains important in systems where Code 39 is already part of an established specification or process.

Data and validation

Standard Code 39 supports uppercase letters, digits and a limited set of symbols. Start and stop characters are encoded as part of the symbol and should normally be handled by the generator rather than typed as ordinary data.

Some workflows use an optional Mod 43 check character. Whether it should be included depends on the target specification.

Structure, size and quiet zones

Code 39 is relatively wide because each character uses a combination of narrow and wide bars/spaces. Adequate quiet zones and sufficient bar height are therefore especially important when placing it into constrained layouts.

Barcode Next support

Barcode Next provides character validation, optional check-character handling where supported, sizing controls, quiet zones, text options, batch generation and professional export.
